John Baker Holroyd, first earl of Sheffield (1735–1821) was a client of James Wyatt and patron of Edward Gibbon. A hyperactive pamphleteer and campaigner, he published on a wide range of topics. In 1769 he purchased Sheffield Park in Sussex for £31,000, employing James Wyatt to redevelop the house in Gothick style, and Capability Brown and Humphry Repton to lay out the park. A great supporter of agricultural improvement, he built a model farm near Sheffield Place, and became
Chairman of the Board of Agriculture. Sue Berry will discuss this interesting character and his collaboration with Wyatt
