Dr Emily Paterson-Morgan will discuss one of the most peculiar and – frankly – ludicrous episodes in Byron’s extremely complex love life: the brief, passionate, yet ultimately unconsummated affair with Lady Frances Webster. Vital to the construction and maintenance of adulterous relationships Georgian England, the adultery letter was a distinct and
widely recognised discourse. Byron’s ‘clandestine correspondence’ with Lady Frances Webster, together with his brilliantly satirical communiques with his favourite confidante, Lady Melbourne, preserves the key features of this epistolary mode and explains the approved methods of writing, distributing and concealing adulterous love letters. Using artefacts and letters preserved in the John Murray Archive in the National Library of Scotland, this talk explores the practical logistics and emotional pressures of infidelity in Georgian England.

The talks starts at 6.30pm.
