What, precisely, defines English, British, or Irish Palladianism? Architectural historian Steven Brindle explores the nature of Palladio’s impact in Britain through his Four Books, his architectural drawings, and his surviving buildings. Some historians have questioned whether a distinct British Palladian architecture ever truly existed. Brindle contends that it did—emerging as a unique 17th- and 18th-century phenomenon shaped by diverse sources and adapted to the tastes and needs of Britain and Ireland.
