Come and spend a sun filled morning exploring the history and architecture of the streets, lanes, square and basins between Limehouse and Wapping.
These ancient villages with their long associations with the maritime trade are brimming with stories of merchants, sailors, dockers and pirates. The narrow lanes were dominated by industries such as sail and rope making, in addition to biscuit production, while the warehouses housed items including marble, ivory and tobacco. Hawksmoor’s majestic St Anne’s, Limehouse presides over the scene, with tales of the White Ensign and freight barges.
We will discuss London’s original Chinatown in Limehouse, the connection between Shadwell and Thomas Jefferson, the printing presses of Wapping, the UK’s oldest police force and the ancient hospital of St Katharine.
The Walk will be led by Meg Ryder, a Londoner who hails from Pimlico. Meg is a qualified solicitor who left the law to establish bespoke walking tours in London to follow her passion for all things historical, artistic and architectural. Meg has a Masters in History from Edinburgh University, and studied History of Art and Architectural History in Rome.
We will meet at 10.45am for a 11am start. This event is for members only. This walk was originally due to be held on 26 June 2025.
