The building is of great architectural and historic importance, having been the place of exile and death of the French emperor Napoleon III, but the building bears the hallmarks of a rich heritage of multiple ownership and historical associations from the early 18th century to the present day.’ Dr Lee Prosser: Curator of the Royal Palaces.

The house features Georgian architecture by George Dance and James ‘Athenian’ Stuart as well as panelling from the Chateau de Bercy, described as possibly the best French interior in England. Its history includes Imperial residents and Royal visitors as well as a brutal double murder.
