2025 marks 200 years since the death of the influential, yet often overlooked, architect George Dance the Younger (1741-1825). Dance served for nearly 50 years as Clerk of the Works to the Corporation of London and undertook a number of private commissions alongside this work, including the celebrated Newgate Jail (1770-84). However, his posthumous reputation has been overshadowed by that of his most famous pupil, John Soane. In this lecture, based on his recently completed PhD research, Harry Adams will consider the various strands of Dance’s career, from his visionary institutional buildings and urban planning schemes, to his close involvement with the Royal Academy and Architect’s Club.
The talk starts at 6.30pm, doors open from 6.15pm.
