Members will already be familiar with the proposals for the redevelopment of Liverpool Street Station, on which the Georgian Group has remained actively engaged, both independently and as part of the Liverpool Street Station Campaign (LISSCA).
Despite detailed objections from the Group and other heritage bodies, the City of London has now resolved to grant planning permission and listed building consent for the scheme. The Group’s concerns have remained consistent throughout the evolution of the proposals, particularly in relation to the height and massing of the development and its impact on the surrounding historic townscape. As set out in our formal representations, the scheme would cause harm to the setting of designated heritage assets of the highest significance, including St Paul’s Cathedral, St Botolph-without-Bishopsgate, and the Bishopsgate Conservation Area.
In response to the City’s decision, the Group has written to the Mayor of London requesting that he intervene. We have asked that he direct refusal of the application or, alternatively, call it in for his own determination, on the basis that the scheme conflicts with the London Plan and raises issues of strategic importance.
Members may wish to write to the Mayor of London, Sir Sadiq Khan, to express concerns regarding the Network Rail proposals for Liverpool Street Station (application ref. 25/00494/FULEIA). Correspondence can be sent to mayor@london.gov.uk. While there is no fixed deadline, the Mayor is expected to make a decision in the coming weeks.
