The Group is delighted that Professor Frank Salmon will succeed Geoffrey Tyack as Editor of the Georgian Group Journal. Since 2021, he has been Director of the Ax:son Johnson Centre for the Study of Classical Architecture (CSCA) based in the Faculty of Architecture and History of Art in collaboration with the Faculty of Classics and housed at the neo-classical Downing College Cambridge.
Frank Salmon said: “I am delighted and honoured that the Trustees of the Georgian Group have offered me the chance to take up the editorship of the Journal. It is an old friend, having begun its life at the same time I began my academic career over three decades ago. In common, I am sure, with all others interested in the architecture of the era it focusses on, I have watched the Journal grow to pre-eminence as a periodical in its field. Its current standing and attractiveness to scholars is due in large measure to the editors who have graced it with their skills and dedication – notably Richard Hewlings and Geoffrey Tyack. Indeed, as Geoffrey steps down in 2026 he will have edited eighteen volumes – exactly half the total numbered volumes published since 1991. That is a remarkable achievement and one not likely ever to be equalled. It is also a hard act to follow. I will do my best, however, to maintain the now well established tradition of The Georgian Group Journal as the place of choice for scholars of British architecture from the late seventeenth to the early nineteenth centuries when they are looking to publish excellent research that is based on new source material, articulately written and beautifully illustrated.”
