The National Trust’s applications for Planning Permission and Listed Building Consent for works to Clandon Park will be heard at Guildford Borough Council’s Planning Committee meeting on the evening of 6 March at 7pm. Members will be aware that the Group submitted a letter of objection to both applications in late January – read our letter here. Our earlier communication to members setting out the reasons for our objection can also be read here.

Anya Lucas, the Group’s incoming Director, – see appointment announcement here – will address the committee, explaining to the councillors in the allotted three minutes, why we believe they should set aside their officers’ recommendation to approve the applications and instead refuse them.

For members who wish to read the local authority’s report, which is provided to the councillors who make up the planning committee, it can be viewed here. The Georgian Group’s Trustees, Casework Committee members, and staff have engaged very seriously with the case over a number of years. While we acknowledge the excellent conservation work which is being undertaken to the house through the proposed programme of Essential Works, we concluded that we cannot support the main applications. In our view they cause an unacceptable and unjustified level of harm to the building.
