After eighteen years editing the Georgian Group Journal, Dr Geoffrey Tyack is standing down after the publication of the 2026 volume. Educated at Oxford, where he remains an Emeritus Fellow of Kellogg College, Geoffrey is widely recognised for his influential studies on urban architecture and architectural heritage. His major works include Oxford: An Architectural Guide, and numerous essays on the development of British towns and buildings of the long eighteenth century. Geoffrey’s exceptional editorial judgement and deep knowledge have ensured the Journal’s continuing excellence and international reputation.

Geoffrey’s successor, who will take over as Editor with the 2027 volume, will be announced later this month.

David Adshead, who as former Director of the Georgian Group worked closely with Geoffrey on six Journal volumes, said: ‘Geoffrey’s extraordinary knowledge of British and European architectural history, and the history of urban planning, has been invaluable in this role, as has his knowledge of what fellow scholars and students, young and mature, were working on at any given moment. These things enabled the careful balancing of the content of the journal and of The Group’s annual conferences, for Geoffrey has been the quiet, intellectual powerhouse behind both. In addition to helping established scholars and encouraging new ones, Geoffrey has found time to contribute no less than five articles of his own to the journal and many book reviews to the magazine. Not resting on his laurels – he is Emeritus Fellow of Kellogg College, University of Oxford, a former Director of the Stanford University Centre in Oxford, President of the Oxfordshire Architectural and Historical Society, a Trustee of the Oxford Preservation Trust, and the author of a number of important books – Geoffrey is taking on from Sheila O’Connell the task of editing our sister publication London Topographical Record. Geoffrey, The Georgian Group thanks you for your brilliant stewardship and salutes you!’

Anya Lucas, the Group’s present Director, added: ‘As a doctoral student, I discovered first-hand what a generous scholar Geoffrey Tyack is. It is a great privilege to be working with Geoffrey on his final (2026) volume of the GGJ. We look forward to celebrating Geoffrey’s extraordinary record as Editor with friends, supporters and past Journal contributors next year’.

A review of Geoffrey’s latest book ‘Oxford Libraries: Architecture’ by Bodleian Library Publishing (2025) is included in the winter issue of our members’ magazine The Georgian.
