Richard Hewlings’s card index has a new home at the University of Cambridge.

The Hewlings Catalogue of Builders is an alphabetical biographical index of references, annotations of surveyors and architects working with builders, masons, carpenters, plasterers, carvers, painters, joiners, glaziers, bricklayers and makers, stonecutters and slaters, plumbers, and others, accumulated by prominent architectural historian Richard Hewlings (11 February 1947 – ) over the past half century. The Hewlings Catalogue comprises an index of approximately 15,000 entries of builders and tradesmen – including a significant number of women – working in the building trades across Britain from the early seventeenth through the mid-nineteenth century.

The CSCA welcomes scholars to consult The Hewlings Catalogue of Builders and should request access by e-mailing csca@aha.cam.ac.uk.
