The Georgian Group is the national charity for the preservation of historic buildings and planned landscapes of c.1700‐1840 in England and Wales. We were established in 1937 and since 1971 have been the statutory advisor on planning issues that affect Georgian heritage. We are seeking to appoint a full-time Conservation Adviser to assess and respond to relevant development proposals in South West of England. The Georgian Group has a statutory right to be notified where total or part demolition of any listed building in England & Wales is proposed. The Group is principally interested in buildings, designed landscapes and structures dating from 1700-1840.
The successful candidate will have a demonstrable knowledge of historic buildings and practical building conservation, as well as familiarity with the listed building control system. The job will require the development of strong contacts with Historic England, local planning officers, church bodies and local heritage organisations and may involve contact with the press or appearance at public inquiries. Attendance at committee meetings in London to present casework will occasionally be necessary. Sound judgement and strong written and oral communication skills are a key requirement. A job share may be considered dependent on two strong candidates who are willing to work on a part-time basis applying. In such an eventuality, both post holders would be required to attend regular London Casework Committee meetings.
The successful candidate (or candidates) will be based in the south west of England and will normally be expected to work from home when not on site visits or attending meetings. They will be proactive, self-motivated and self-reliant. Site visits are an integral part of the job, and a full driving licence is required. With the advent of e-planning, we are now consulted electronically, so computer literacy is essential. Casework boundaries in the south west of England include all those of the Historic England SW Regional Office together with some counties in central southern England which fall within Historic England’s South Eastern region. Casework areas may however be extended if required by The Group.
Applicants should have a flexible and positive attitude to working arrangements and a willingness to assist as necessary with the charity’s general activities, such as educational events and administrative tasks.
The closing date for applications is 1pm on Monday 10th March. Interviews will be held on Thursday 20th March. The starting date for successful candidates, depending on the length of any notice period, will be Thursday 1st May (or as soon as possible)
