Silk – from China to Sudbury


Director of Humphries Weaving

Inheriting skills from the original silk weaving practices in Spitalfields in the 17th century, Humphries Weaving is underpinned by ancient traditions in an evolving practice. Richard Humphries founded Humphries Weaving in 1972 and in 1985 was awarded an MBE for his services to the textile industry. He is now a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Weavers, London’s oldest guild.

Origins of Chinoiserie wallpapers and their history to the present day


Director at de Gournay De Gournay wallpaper was founded by Claud Cecil Gurney in 1986, filling a gap in traditional art. Beginning with patterns and styles inspired by Georgian houses, de Gournay continue their bespoke craft today using traditional, historically informed techniques. De Gournay’s director, Dominic Evans Freke, nephew of Claud, will be delving into this rich history.
