Event Details

Like most British cities, Oxford changed profoundly in the Georgian era. These changes affected both the City and the University, and this two-hour walk will encompass some of the most interesting buildings in both. We will explore the central University area, including James Gibbs’s Radcliffe Camera, and also one or more of the colleges, hopefully including Worcester College, with buildings by Nicholas Hawksmoor. We will see how new building and rebuilding transformed the appearance of the city centre streets, and will conclude with a visit to the Ashmolean Museum, designed in 1841 by one of the most important of all late-Georgian architects, Charles Robert Cockerell.

Geoffrey Tyack leads.
