Event Details

Bury St Edmunds is not the county town of Suffolk but it is the social centre of West Suffolk. Once dominated by a magnificent abbey, it developed as a market town for the rich agricultural land around it. The medieval plan is made up of a grid pattern of streets, once lined with timber-framed houses, largely rebuilt or refaced in the 18th century. The major local family, the Herveys of Ickworth, built a grand town house in the 1730s, Robert Adam designed a small theatre, William Wilkins a larger replacement, and fine assembly rooms were provided for the local gentry. The parish church was designated a cathedral in 1914 and its spire, visible for miles around, was added as a Millennium project. This walk will explore the 18th-century development of the town and it is hoped there will be the opportunity to go inside a couple of fine 18th buildings.
