£50 (inc. lunch)
York is one of Britain’s finest cities and Darrell Buttery, former President of the York Civic Trust, will lead this tour of some of its most interesting Georgian sites. After taking in buildings such as Burlington’s great Assembly Rooms and King’s Manor, once a girls school attended by Laurence Sterne’s daughter and ‘Gentleman Jack’ with fine 17th– and 18th-century interiors, lunch will be held at the Medical Society Rooms, one of the larger timber framed houses to have survived in York with a fine walled garden; it was considerably altered internally in the 18th-century, retaining many features from that period. After lunch will be a visit to the Mansion House, built 1725-32 for the Lord Mayors of York. It is the earliest purpose-built house for a Lord Mayor still in existence, predating the Mansion House in London by some 20 years, and it recently underwent substantial restoration, being shortlisted for a Georgian Group Architectural Award in 2019.
