Historically part of Surrey, Carshalton now sits within the boundaries of Greater London. By the beginning of the 18th century had become a popular place to live given its proximity to both London and to the spa town of Epsom, as well as the various recreational opportunities, such as fishing and hunting, it offered. Now consisting of a number of neighbourhoods, Carshalton retains a gentile and pleasant feel, particularly in the picturesque Carshalton Village area.
The focus of this visit will be the Carshalton House Water Tower. Built in the early 18th century to house a water driven pump supplying water to Carshalton House, now a school, and the fountains in its gardens, it was designed by Sir John Fellowes as a multi-purpose building and contains an orangery, saloon and a bathroom which retains its original Delft tiles.
