Gainsborough was a prolific portrait and landscape painter, draughtsman and printmaker who is considered one of the most important portrait artists of the latter half of the 18th century. He produced nearly 1000 portraits of his contemporaries and this talk will examine how his portrait style varied depending on the circumstances of the commission and the changing moods and fashions of the sitters.

Hugh Belsey is an art historian who is an expert on the work of Thomas Gainsborough, having been curator of Gainsborough’s House in Sudbury for 23 years from 1981. Since 2016 he has been a senior research fellow at the Yale Center for British Art where he has worked on compiling the catalogue raisonné of Gainsborough’s portraits, due for publication in 2019.
