Event Details

The Travellers Club, the oldest club on Pall Mall, celebrates its bicentenary in 2019. Founded ‘for gentlemen who had travelled out of the British Isles to a distance of at least five hundred miles from London in a direct line’, it was housed in two other buildings before Charles Barry was awarded the commission to design a purpose built club house on the present site at 106 Pall Mall in 1826. This talk will explore the history and architecture of what has been called ‘the quintessential English gentleman’s club’.

John Martin Robinson is an architectural historian and former Trustee and Vice-Chairman of the Georgian Group. He has published extensively on a range of architectural themes, including studies of the Wyatts and on Georgian country houses. His book The Travellers Club: A Bicentennial History was published at the end of 2018.
